CFF Import Errors for COMP-3 fields

Source system is providing file where COMP-3 (as well as other display numerics) fields are not properly initialized on some records. I'm able to import the data if I provide defaults in DS. I'm trying to use redefines to provide a PIC X equivalent to avoid altering the data on the way in.

Can this work? Other options?
