The issue is with whatever wrote the VarChar columns into the table. VarChar will preserve blanks if they are there. Maybe you can update the table manually to TRIM this column?

Usually this means that the project needs to be re-indexed.
Search for the DS.REINDEX command and the caveats on its use.

Yes it can. Read any good manual on sorting, particular heap-merge sort.

Try using an operating system sort utility.

999 is still MB, and still smaller than 1.6GB, so it still won't fit.

"Interesting" is what happens when you exhaust available memory and start getting access violation errors.

My guess is that the file system on which /tmp is mounted simply does not have enough space for the temporary files (named pipes, effectively) used by the Link Collector stage.
