SAP PACK R/3 5.2.1 and NLS

I'm trying to load Chinese characters (e.g., 软件) into SAP using the IDoc Load stage.

I've been able to migrate these characters throughout my process using the project default (ISO8859-1) character map.

Unfortunately, when I reach the IDoc Load stage, I find that the only character map that is supported is UTF8. See IBM's ecase 119000.

When I use UTF8, though, the client no longer sees the Chinese characters in SAP. The odd thing is, though, if they copy the unrecognized characters from SAP and paste in Excel, the Chinese characters are once again visible (i.e., in Excel).

I'm relatively inexperienced with both SAP and NLS. Thanks for your help.
