Version 8.0.1 Installation

Did anyone gone thru this installation process?

Recommendations and suggestions from Pro's who already installed will be appreciated.

I saw one checklist on Installation Doc which I may follow
and let me know, if something needs to be consodered and is a experience thats never documented anywhere.

FYI:

I am planning it on Solaris Sun OS
Repository on 10g, remote and 10g client on DataStage host.
Domain, I am still working with it.
As usual, Client and Documentation on Windows XP - SP2

Hi,
I am not a Pro in DS.
But I have attended a training session on DS version 8.
And know how to install it on Windows....
Installation itself should not be tough.
But the configuration of users is a bit tricky.
Because a new layer has been sandwiched between the existing client and server layers(WAS).
So you need to use the Web console first and create a user there.
And then add the mapping for the user in the Datastage administrator.....

WAS = WebSphere Application Server

This means that the same user ID can be used for all tools that employ the WAS. DataStage is just one of these tools.

WAS is it part of installation or a pre-req I should plan?

It's all totally different.

First you have to install IBM Information Server.

Then you have to install IBM Websphere Application Server and configure secuity.

Only then do you install DataStage server and license it (and QualityStage, if you have that also).

You might also install the Analysis Server, the Federation Server, and so on.

If you plan to install everything (all the servers) on one machine, then you'd better have lots of grunt in that machine.

Incidentally, IBM recommends a minimum of 2GB in the client machine.

You may want to look at the PDF which ships in with Datastage.
It should tell you how to configure most of the things.
If you already have WAS you can configure it. If not, you can have a new installation of WAS. Actually the Setup is very user-friendly on Windows.

I got the order

1. Repository
2. Domain
3. Engine

and Client and Documentation.

Is WAS available for Sun Solaris OS?

Yeah
WAS is just a Web Application Server. And can be one of many Web Application Servers available. But, Datastage comes with a WAS.

Just one more thing, if you already have installed WAS you need at least version 6.0.2.5 in order to install Information Server

Ok, then if I want to install on two machine (the engine, the domain and the repository... with the client obviously on a third!), would I be better off to dedicate a machine solely to the engine, leaving the domain and the repository (Oracle) together or should I favour the installation of the domain within the same box as the engine leaving the repository alone on the second server?

In short, what is the trade-off between these two scenarios?

Your DataStage CPU licenses are expensive while you Metadata Server license comes free (with DataStage). So put the DataStage server on it's own grunt machine so you get as much CPU and RAM as it can take while running and put the Metadata domain and repository on the smaller machine. This will give you the fastest DataStage jobs.

If the clients are in a different box, and if they are behind firewall(s), make sure you enable the ports required for clients to talk to the server.
We had a lengthy mail/interaction with IBM Support to resolve one of those scenarios. I posted a list of ports that IBM Support requested us to open in viewtopic.php?t=112198
It should be in the installation/release notes as well.

IS installation best practices -
I have done it!!
OS - Solaris 5.9
Metadata rep - bundled DB2 preferred

Recommended requirements-
1. 4-8 GB of memory.
2. 4 CPUs
3. 1 GB for WebSphere App Server
4. 500 MB for DB2
5. 1.4 GB for IS components
6. 3 GB for metadata repository
7. 2 GB for temp space during the installation to inflate all pieces of installer.

Step1
To prepare Linux and UNIX systems for installing the suite:
1. Log on to the system as a root user.
2. Ensure that your system meets the system requirements for the product
modules and components that you want to install.
3. Turn off any firewall software that is installed on the system.
4. Optional: Turn off your antivirus software.
5. If you have an earlier version of IBM Information Server or DataStage
installed on your computer, determine whether you need to remove or upgrade
the earlier version.

Are you installing from /tmp?
How much disk space is available in /tmp?

Step 2 -
Make sure firewall is unblocked.
Make sure the ports 31538, 50000, 50 are un-used.
To check if they are open - loginto host machine and type -

telnet <hostname> <port#>

IF the below comes as output, then the port is in use
Trying 164.103.160.53...
Connected to sunutil.
Escape character is '^]'.

If you get this, then that port is not in use.
Trying 164.103.160.53...
telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

You will need to get these ports unused for successful IS installation.

Step 3 -
Compiler -
Check for C++ compiler existence -
Unix command -
which cc
or
which gcc
If The compiler isn't installed then you will have install it.
If installed and not export to path then you will need to add it to your shell login and export the path.

Step 4
Once you goto the is-ia-suite directory you should find the file "install"
Decide what type of installation do you want?
Graphical/Console/Silent

For graphical installation :
From command prompt type ./install
This should invoke IBM Information Server installation wizard.

For console installation :
From command prompt type ./install -console -is:<tempdir> <directoryname>

For silent installation :
I haven't done it yet

This should invoke IBM Information Server installation wizard!!

Step 5 Decide what database do you choose for your metadata repository
1. DB2 comes bundled with IS and is the most recommendata met rep dB for IS on IBM platforms.
2. For non-IBM platforms it shouldn't matter as long as your dB is pre-installed and pre-configured
You will need to know the path of the dB for non-bundled DB2 installations.

We are trying to install Information Server 8.0.1 on HP Itanium. However at step 13, instead of installing WS Application Server it's asking for us to point to the (assumed previously installed) WS Application Server. (We are using the -console installation option)

I was under the assumption that the WS Application Server would install with Information Server, as the above post indicates. Any ideas on why we are seeing a difference?

Also some previous posts seem to indicate that WS Application Server needs to be installed before Information Server. Anbody have any further experince with this?
