Number of new post becomes 0 after an unsuccessful login

What happened here--if I'm understanding you correctly--is you clicked the "View most recent posts" link (which you could only see if you were logged in) and you were then asked to enter your password. Something caused your session to expire when you clicked on the "View most recent posts" link, so that you were "logged out" just as you were trying to view the posts. This may be a bug, but it's not yet certain.

I am certain that unsuccessful logins do not update your "most recent visit" field in the database--the timestamp value upon which "most recent posts" is based.
