No pop-up when job fails to compile

Newly installed DS8 on Linux. Exported job from DS6 on windows to DS8 on Linux. With the exception of 1 sequence all jobs compiled on DS8. The one problem sequence does not compile, does provide any pop-up message and no entries in log file. Pop ups work on the install because if I move one job on the sequence palette it asks if I want to save it and continue with compilation. Responding yes it attempts to compile and no messages but director shows that it is not compiled.
Successful compilations do not have a pop up showing success but director shows they were compiled.
A second question is what is the best method to change all the links to external files. (moved from windows\ to linux/.
