Can client v. 7 connect to server v. 6?

Post by admin »

Anyone knows if it is possible to connect to server version 6 with the new
client version 7?

Thanks!

Wim van Dommelen.

Can client v. 7 connect to server v. 6?

Post by admin »

The work around we use when upgrading DataStage is Windows Terminal
Services.

Have one version (say, the new one) on your own PC and the other version
(say, the old one) on a Terminal Server. I'd recommend using the newer
remote desktop client (comes with XP, but can be downloaded for other
versions of windows).

As an added bonus, it works great over a dial up connection or wide area
network. We have a 2Mbit link between our desktops and our DataStage
servers. Director runs better on a terminal server on the same LAN as the
DataStage server that it does on our own PCs.

I should have also mentioned ...

You can get shareware products (I don't know any by name, but I've seen them
in action) that will run a virtual computer (complete with it's own separate
OS, virtual disk etc) on your computer at the same time you as are running
windows. You can switch between the 2 on the fly. Your real computer and
the virtual computer can talk to each other via the network as if they were
2 separate computers.

If you used this approach, you could run one version of DataStage client on
your "real" computer and the other version on the "virtual" computer ... at
the same time.

ya, there is a tool vmware which enable you to have a
virtual computer and switches b/n the OS on a click.
As there are complexities involved in having two
clients on same machine we decided to divide the
development group and work resp.

thanks,
william
