Logical Devices between W2K and XP

Post by admin »

Hi together.

We have a Server that run's with W2K. The Client is installed with Windows XP . One shared Folder has a logical Device (the reasen is to be a thing of the past). Our Problem is, we can't found or connect the logical Device within an sequential Stage. On a Testinstallation with both parts are W2K is already Running.

Has anybody an answer for us?

Logical Devices between W2K and XP

Can you clarify what you mean by a "logical device"? Are you referring to a mapped drive or something else?

Where the DataStage client (if that's what you mean by the client running XP) is running should be irrelevant as the client is not involved when a job is running.

Can you give more information about where this shared folder is in relation to the DataStage server?

We can probably help, but need to better understand your problem first.

Logical Devices between W2K and XP

Post by admin »

I still have one question - you mention that you can browse to L: in explorer and can see it in a DOS session. When you do this, are you running Windows explorer and the DOS session on the client or on the server?

It is still unclear to me whether the L: mapping exists on the client or the server. DataStage Designer (or running jobs) will only see drive mappings on the server. Further, even drive mappings you can see if you log into the server console or via an administrative terminal server session may not necessarily be visible to DataStage as the DataStage jobs (and the server side of a client connection) inherit their environment from the appropriate DataStage service (name depends on DataStage version) which in turn inherits its environment from the service control manager which starts it. It is not quite as simple as this as once one background process maps a drive, it appears to become available to others (perhaps others on the same background desktop, but this is not meant to be an in depth discussion of Windows architecture).

So, how do you get a drive mapped so that server jobs can see it? I would suggest the most reliable method is to explicitly map the drive from a DataStage job using the NET USE command called from within a job. Type NET USE /? For more details.

Alternatively, I suspect (but have not tried it) that if you telnet to the Windows DataStage server and then use the DOS command to get a windows command shell, you can then do something like this:

NET USE L: \\computername\share\directories /USER:domain\username /PERSISTENT:YES

I think this might remain available within DataStage jobs. If this doesn't work, then do it from a control job before it runs other jobs as they will inherit their Windows environment from the control job. This much we have done before.

A comment about changing paths... You have learnt first hand why you should never hard code paths in a DataStage job. Always put the paths as a parameter to a job. You can then use some sort of parameter manager (refer DataStageXchange or use a home written one as we do) so that paths only need to be changed in one place to apply across all jobs.

I would suggest that you DO change your jobs - but change them to start using a parameter.

Hopefully I have understood your situation correctly.

Sorry for my bad explanation.

"Logical Device":
That means for Example: (Logical) Device L: = (Physical Device) D:\ProjectDirectory\WorkDir etc....
In the past, was Device L: as an physical Device on the Server. Now we has'nt the physical Device L:, we have only D:\ProjectDirectory etc..
But all the relevant Jobs use still Device L:. If we Change one Job (only for Test) to the physical Adress (means D:\ProjectDirctory etc...) it runs without problems. Change all Jobs to the physical Adress ist not a good idea, it's possible the physical Adresse change in the future again.

"Client"
Yes, we mean DataStage Client. Our DataStage Server is running with Windows 2000 Server and the DataStage Client is runnig with Windows XP.
The Problem is:
DataStage Designer do'nt show the Logical Device L: in a Sequential File Stage if we Browse at the Field "File Name".

By the way: Device L: is usable in Windows Explorer and in DOS-Window.

I hope, my Problem is now more transparent an you can help me.

Thanks a lot.

Greetings Peter Reich
