For PX, you are better off with an External Source stage to feed the XML filename into your job as detailed here by Ernie. See if that solves your problem.

One obvious answer is to do "it" in a stage variable then. Or post "it" so we have some idea what your "calculation" is. Include the datatypes involved when you do. [OT] Nybble, eh? I'm not sure it will reduce anything, but sure - you can include screenshots here and many have. Just like in any other web forum, you'll first need someplace to host them and there are plenty of free file hosting sites out there. Google will turn up a ton, FileShack and PhotoBucket come to mind but...
