Re: MS SQL Server Stored Proc & DataStage
You might want to see if you have more luck with an OLE/DB stage connecting to SQL Server. As far as the second error, I think this message is typical of when nothing in a job is running but the status is still running. It should return to a compiled state with nothing to worry about (except the ori...

someone please put Ken out of his misery
Yeah, until you get a client with an Oracle table with a primary surrogate key of decimal(3). AHHHHHHHHH. Kill me, kill me now. bang that's pretty bad. I just got through with a slowly changing dimension in which it was closing in on time to increase the key from decimal(6) to decimal(7). They kept...

After upgrading from 5.1 to 6.0 performance issues surrounding a large number of jobs in a project have all improved greatly with one exception: In sequencers it takes even longer to open Job Activity stages. My only guess is the time required to select all jobs and sequencers and sort them for the ...

Archiving Oliver Knowledge
It would be a time consuming task to fully analyze and re-organize the oliver content in a better presentation manner, but it is a good idea to investigate all the possilble means to do this. For a starting point, you could focus on creating a FAQ. There seems to be a variety of questions that get a...

VC and ClearCase
I'm at a client now that is using ClearCase for their Java application development, but basically only using Version Control for its DataStage source control. ClearCase is used to store entire-project .dsx backups since VC's intent is to be 'version control' and not as a backup process, but there ha...

When to start using MetaStage
I wanted to start a brief discussion and when the best time for DataStage XE customers to begin using MetaStage in reference to when they begin their DS based ETL efforts. I have previously heard the opinion that for new adopters it makes sense to wait 1 year after beginning ETL work with DS to begi...

A few thoughts
1) I recently saw in a TDWI white paper an estimate that it takes 3 months to learn an ETL tool and 1 year to become good at it. Just an opinion, but I think it is fairly accurate. 2) I've also thought the best ETL team would consist of experienced and new ETL developers. In theory the new developer...

AxcelPack
If AxcelPack is installed, it adds an option in a jobs properties to 'allow multiple instances'. Then when you run a job in Director, a box appears for an 'Invocation Id', and it allows the user to run the same job multiple times at the same instant. For instance, I may have a job that processes fou...

automated DS backups
Are you using the command line export? If not, see some info on dsexport.exe in your DataStage client directory from this thread: http://www.tools4datastage.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=81619 I believe dsexport.exe may have changed to dscmdexport.exe for release 5.2 and up...I have a DOS batch using...

For a large volume select that can be called 'simple', I don't think you'll find much difference between a stored proc vs. a DS-generated select. It is much more likely for large differences to be be found when performing 'complex' tasks, but I personally would recommend doing it both ways (time per...

Bypadding the doc_tool.mdb startup macro
Ray Wurlod: "To do anything else you have to open Doc_Tool.mdb bypassing its startup macro (select Doc_Tool.mdb in Windows Explorer, then use Shift-Enter, or use Shift-F11 once in Access). " If you don't have time to create your own custom reports with the doc_tool data, there are about 3...
