Happy B-Day DataStage

On January 20 Ascential DataStage® turned eight years old. Brings a tear to the eye, doesn't it?

A little history lesson: In 1998 Gartner ranked Ardent (now Ascential Software) in its bottom left hand quadrant with regards to ability to execute and completeness of vision. Now Gartner ranks Ascential Software as tops in its class.

Congrats, DataStage!

Of special interest is the business wire about VMARK and DataStage from 1997 included below.

WESTBORO, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 1997--

Early users praise speed and robustness for building Data Marts

and Data Warehouse solutions

VMARK Software, Inc. (NASDAQ:VMRK), one of the world's leading client/server software companies, today began shipping DataStage, its integrated software suite for rapidly developing and deploying highly scalable, robust data marts and data warehouses. VMARK announced DataStage in November 1996.

"Over the last few months our beta customers have validated the robustness of DataStage and demonstrated how quickly a DataStage data mart can be built and deployed," said Peter L. Fiore, VMARK vice president and general manager of the data warehouse division. "DataStage is a new approach in the market that spans the gap between older, more expensive, and complex data warehouse products and first-generation data mart tools that lack extensibility and scalability."

DataStage offers a quick, out-of-the-box solution for either departmental data marts or enterprise data warehousing requirements, and replaces the costly and complex investments only large organizations could previously afford to make. Using familiar point-and-click techniques, DataStage allows the data warehouse process to be visually defined by linking together reusable software components called "stages." Providing a visual "process-oriented" model, DataStage significantly reduces the cost and complexity typically associated with building robust data warehouses.

"DataStage reduced what would have been a two-year project for us to about two months," noted Mark Edgerton, MIS director at Harte-Hanks, Inc., a diversified communications media company. "DataStage shortcut and automated the process of building our data warehouse." Harte-Hanks is using VMARK's DataStage to create a warehouse that integrates information from the company's Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Credit History applications with its Order Entry and Customer Support applications.

VMARK's DataStage is an integrated product suite that simplifies and automates the extraction, transformation, integration, and maintenance of data from multiple operational sources. DataStage's graphical drag-and-drop environment enhances productivity by allowing users to design the data warehouse process using a direct visual model of the flow of data from sources through transformation processing to the target data warehouse.

The Vertical Warehouse: Applications and Data Warehouses Merge

With DataStage, VMARK is pioneering a new concept in data warehousing called the Vertical Warehouse, which extends packaged client/server applications with data mart/warehouse add-on modules. The vertical warehouse is a natural derivative of the growing trend for organizations to buy applications rather than build them. Geared to third-party solutions providers, the DataStage Vertical Warehouse will help independent software vendors and value added resellers with the difficult job of transforming and mapping application data into the target data warehouse.

"DataStage was designed to enable application software vendors to package their offering with an industry-specific data model, transformation rules, business intelligence tools, and value-added consulting," noted Fiore. "This approach to delivering data marts benefits both the reseller and end-user through dramatically lower costs and shorter implementations, yielding a significantly better return on investment."

VMARK will focus on establishing partnerships with application providers and integrators to deliver data mart and warehouse solutions in key vertical markets where demand for end-user data access is a priority, including financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, and retail.

Pricing and Availability

DataStage is currently available in various components with prices starting at approximately $37,500 (US).
